Growing Up with Grandparents: The Key to Happier and More Secure Children

Children have a special bond with their grandparents, filled with love and understanding. Grandparents often step in as caregivers when parents are busy. Some of my best memories are from spending holidays with my grandparents, where I felt like I was on a mini-vacation—free to explore, make mistakes, and have fun in ways I couldn't at home with my parents.

Benefit #1: Reduces the Risk of Depression
Research shows that a close emotional bond with grandparents lowers the risk of depression in children. A study by Boston College, which followed 356 grandchildren and 374 grandparents over 19 years, found that kids with strong grandparent relationships were much less likely to experience depression.

This relationship benefits both sides—grandparents stay active, and children feel secure and supported, especially during tough times like parental separation or school bullying.

Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.
— Proverbs 17:6

Benefit #2: Better Coping with Traumatic Events
A University of Oxford study led by Professor Ann Buchanan found that close relationships with grandparents help children handle traumatic events better. The study, involving over 1,500 children, showed that those deeply involved with their grandparents had fewer behavioral and emotional issues. Grandmothers often provide nurturing, while grandfathers play a mentoring role.

According to Kimberly Agresta, a clinical social worker, involving grandparents early in a child's life builds strong emotional bonds, providing kids with additional loving and supportive adults, enhancing their sense of stability and security.

Benefit #3: Greater Sense of Comfort
Having grandparents involved in childcare provides comfort and support to both parents and kids. Parents feel secure knowing their children are in safe hands, and kids often find it easier to open up to their grandparents. This family support system allows parents to feel included in raising their children while benefiting from the additional help, making the whole process more comforting and joyful for everyone involved.
