Reflecting on Modern Family Dynamics

This blog is written by Mark Morris.

In today's society, it's evident that we are navigating through a tumultuous period. The Bible prophesized times where what is morally wrong is seen as right, and vice versa, leading to widespread societal dysfunction. One of the most profound impacts of this moral inversion is on the family unit. When families fracture, it is often the children who bear the brunt of the fallout. Consequently, grandparents are frequently stepping in to fill the void left by absent or incapacitated parents.

A recent article by Amelia Ferrell Knisley in the West Virginia Watch (October 20, 2023) highlights this trend. Knisley notes that "Grandparents raising their grandchildren in West Virginia is a very widespread phenomenon; in most counties, it is somewhere between 40 to 50%." This striking statistic underscores a broader societal shift, exacerbated by the drug epidemic that has ravaged the state. West Virginia, one of the nation's most elderly states, now sees nearly half of its grandparents assuming primary caregiving roles for their grandchildren.

The traditional family structure, once predominantly comprised of parents and their children, is evolving. Today, it's not uncommon to find multi-generational households, spanning two, three, or even five generations. This shift, while challenging, requires constant adaptation and the cultivation of virtues like patience and resilience.

My personal experience resonates deeply with these statistics. My wife and I became the primary caregivers for our grandchildren following a tragic family violence incident that left them orphaned. Over the 16 years that followed, until they reached adulthood, we underwent significant adjustments to establish a new normal. With unwavering faith and the grace of God, we successfully navigated the complexities of raising them.

Indeed, our world may be growing more dysfunctional, placing additional burdens on grandparents. However, this also presents a unique opportunity for the church to demonstrate its strength and support. By standing beside these resilient grandparents, we can offer much-needed assistance and encouragement.

For those in this situation, remember to stay strong and trust in God's guidance. For those who know someone facing these challenges, be a source of unwavering support and encouragement.

God bless until next time.
