When Did I Get Old?
The following blog is by Mark Morris.
Recently I was looking through some different. YouTube channels, there was nothing going on, and I was kind of bored. I came across this song title that got my attention. The title of the song simply ask a question “When Did I Get Old?”.
As I listened to it, I begin to ask myself the same question that this song was asking. When did I get old? One line of the song states “ I don’t recognize this world and I don’t remember this pain” and it went on, and on as a gentleman who was singing it in a Bluesy type of tempo.
The more he sang the older I felt. There was a lot of the lyrics that I could identify with, and even to the point of feeling the emotion of the song.
My wife heard me singing along with it, and she gently reminded me that I wasn’t that old and that I did not need to get that song as part of my mentality or get it into my Spirit. Realize that this was all done in a joking fashion, but I could feel the emotion of the song. It was easy to get caught up in the emotion of when did I get old.
Dr. David Martyn Lloyd Jones, said “Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself?”
I may not remember the pain I feel as I age but I don’t have to listen to the pain or the emotions that try to tell me that my best years are behind me. And since my energy is not as strong as it was, that I should maybe take a sit back and watch others do what I used to do.
Perhaps we should do as Dr. D. M. L. Jones said and quit listening, and start talking to ourselves. Ephesians 5:19 tells us that we should be
“speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
This passage of scripture has become a part of my talking to myself. In talking to myself, I sing the old song “When I think of the goodness of Jesus, and all He has done for me, my soul cries out Hallelujah! Thank God for saving me.”
I sing songs like “He’s done so much for me, I cannot tell it all” and “Jesus I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me”. These songs are part of my speaking to myself, and they rejuvenate my spirit.
Paul also tells us of certain things to think about. The scripture tells us to think on truth and virtue and things that have a good praise report. I don’t know about you, but that makes me feel better than thinking about my achy, breaky back.
Don’t become an old and unhappy soul. Let’s talk of the goodness of God and what he has done for us. Sages, we have been there and done that and we have seen the hand of God move mightily, and we have powerful testimonies of all that he has done for us.
As the Bluesy songwriter stated, I don’t recognize this world because I’m getting older, but I can say I have seen Jesus move mountains. So I too can do whatever it is he wants me to do.
Let’s get up and move because it is well.
See you at the sage Summit till next time. God bless.
