Embracing Faith's Prompt: Beyond the Call to Action in Life's Seasons

Growing up in church, I often heard the phrase, “God called me to, preach, teach, evangelize, as well as many other things.”

I remember going to the City Of Republic, Missouri years ago to plant a church. We often stated that God had called us to this city.

I still believe God calls us to do certain things in his kingdom. I believe he calls us to preach or he calls us to go to certain places.

However, as I grow into the sage age of life, I realize my being called into something is less likely now than in the days of my youth.

Mark Morris, Author

Just because my physical age or my health limits what I am able to do, doesn’t mean I can’t do anything. I may never be called to go, but I can still do.

In my morning devotion recently a verse stood out to me. In 2 Thes 1:11, I was reading from the NLT. Paul admonished the church that he would keep praying for them while asking God to enable them to live a life that was worthy of his call. We realize the call he was talking to the church about was the call onto salvation . He continues his prayer by asking Jesus to give them the power to accomplish all the good things that your faith prompt you to do.

That last phrase got my attention. According to Paul, our faith will prompt us to do good things.

Matthew 9:29 teaches us that according to your faith, let it be done to you. I was taught as a young man that we have the ability to have negative faith and positive faith. I don’t want a negative faith to tell me there is nothing left . But I want a positive faith to prompt me to do good works.

I had the privilege of starting my life with a very positive faith Pastor. She believed we were never done working for the Lord.

Sister Eva Hunt was a spiritual giant in so many ways. It was she who won my parents to the Lord when society had given up on their families. Even after her retirement from pastoring, she remained a positive influence to all that she came in contact with.

She had a saying, and I believe it fits this time of our lives. “ If all the littles would do a little then a lot would get done.”

I can’t go to a foreign field or start a church in a metro city. However, I can feel my faith prompt me to do my little.

Sister Hunt lived in my hometown, all my life. She stayed in covenant with the city, and even when her strength was nearly gone, she still felt the prompting of faith and God gave her the power to do as her faith prompted her. Our faith will not prompt us beyond the power he gives.

Just because you don’t feel a call doesn’t mean you can’t feel a prompting of your faith.
