I Still Need You
The following blog is by Mark Morris. #grandparents
School is back in session! I know it has been a busy summer for all of the grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. You are no doubt tired out from trying to keep up with the energy that they have.
As grandparents raising grandchildren, one of the most important things to remember is the relationship that grandparents have with each other, is still very important. My wife and I have found that we had to redo the way we maintained our good relationship.
Evenings are the traditional ways and times for couples to go out and enjoy each other’s company. But, when the grandchildren came to live with us, every evening seem to be filled with homework and extracurricular activities. So the morning date became our new normal.
After we would drop the kids off at school, when finances would allow, we would go out for for a breakfast date. Some place such as Cracker Barrel became our hot date spot. In the winter months, we would try to get there and get a seat in front of the fireplace. It was always warm and cozy and the atmosphere was very relaxing.
We loved going there so much that when we retired from being pastors, the church bought my wife and I matching white rocking chairs from the Cracker Barrel.
If you are a single grandparent raising grandchildren, don’t allow yourself to become isolated when the kids go back to school.
I know there will be lots of chores and catching up to do at home, but try to find a place to go and if nothing else drink coffee and eat a piece of pie. The fellowshipping and talking to other folks your age, and the connections you make will be very helpful.
If someone in the church that you attend is raising their grandchildren alone, encouraging them by inviting them to coffee or tea.
Also, use the time to stay caught up on your Bible reading and personal devotion. It’s very important that you stay spiritually sharp even though times may be tough.
Get your housework done because the kids will be home soon.
God bless you. You are doing a good work. Till next time.
